The sun is shining and it’s the Wednesday before the June Bank Holiday weekend. That can mean only one thing – Listowel Writers Week begins tonight. Listowel Writers Week is Ireland’s most prestigious literary festival, with literary competitions taking place in the months leading up to the festival and workshops and events on during the week. Workshops and events are given by some of the most prominent international literary figures, with attendees traveling from around the world.
The town has been preparing for the last number of weeks, but for the festival, the organising never stops.
We’ve been in the honoured position of being involved with the website design and maintenance side of www.writersweek.ie for the past 4 years. We started by just updating and maintaining the site, ensuring that the WordPress version and all plugins and themes were up to date and the entire site was backed up and safely stored offline.
Since then, we have completely redesigned the website in 2016. After a lot of back and forth with Maire and her team, we agreed on a design that was colourful and showed the fun side of the festival, but was also easy to navigate and find all the information that is contained within.
The biggest addition we’ve made to the site, was the ability for people to upload their competition entries and pay for them if necessary, using PayPal. We’ve used a couple of iterations over the past number of years, improving the system year on year, based on user feedback and changing requirements.
At the centre of everything we do, is to ensure ease of use for both the managers of the website (our customers) and the end user of the website (our customers customers!). We provided comprehensive instructions for updating and maintaining the more commonly edited aspects of the site, such as Workshops, Competitions and Festival Programme. This allowed the festival staff update a lot of the content themselves, thus saving them time and money. We were also on standby at all times, for advice and support whenever it was needed.
“Listowel Writers’ Week have worked with SJS Web Design over the past three years to develop and design our website. During this time we also have developed an online system for entering our competitions online which has improved our service to our customers. We have found Sean and Martina excellent to work with, they have ensured that our website completely supports our festival, they have consistently been at the end of the phone or email when required and always listened and taken on board our ideas and made them happen. SJS have always been a pleasure to work with, professional, efficient and supportive and excellent value for money. We highly recommend SJS Web Design. Thanks for everything Sean and Martina and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the future. “
